Dear the concept of identity,
The simulation activity today really made me think about the concept of self-identity. Just like how we compromise part of our habit to get along with the other group as we are mixed together, I changed a log when I spent a year in America as an exchange student. Though I am happy about the changes I went through, I found myself struggling a lot about my identity or position in the community when I came back to China. Because I grew up in China but now I endowed some Western ideas, making me so different from the teenagers in China. I felt lost as I was stuck in the middle of these two cultures: western and China.
But after today’s activity, I learned some strategies to deal with the identity problem. I realized it is extremely important to let others understand my culture (to let people have the information of how I lived in my culture). And then we can work out a way to avoid the potential conflicts and problems. So communication is really important when I go to a new culture. And with such communication, I would establish a clear idea of what are the things I can compromise and what are the culture identity I should hold onto when I get to a new culture.
Sincerely,
Xinyu
