Episode 8

On Monday, we were all given the task of going on a scavenger hunt with our base camp group. There were nine base camp groups and we all chose a random location in Beijing to explore.
Specifically for my group, we learned a lot about the history of Song Qing Ling, who was once the Vice President of China. She married Sun Yat Sen and helped with the revolution that established The Republic of China. We were able to visit Song Qing Ling's home and see her bedroom, kitchen, and study room.
The scavenger hunt was a great experience because it allowed both the current UW students and incoming international freshmen to bond while exploring Beijing together. My blog post group (Houyu, Mandy, Xin, and Kuanya) all had many different insights about our scavenger hunt experience.
"I'm from Beijing and I'm really familiar with the subway system. When we were coming back from Wangfujing, people followed me to get to the subway station, followed me to transfer. It is interesting that in my city I somehow led the people subconsciously." - Houyu
"The activity that we did today made me realize that I can't assume that every culture follows the same set of rules that my culture follows. I should be more open to learning and understanding the rules of different cultures before judging someone who has grown up in a different culture." - Mandy
